Agriculture & Food Systems

Evidence for climate-smart agriculture, food security and resilient value chains across Kenya and East Africa.

Overview

Research that keeps pace with a changing food system

Agriculture is the sector our team has worked in longest, and it is where DEVMENT’s evaluation methods were first tested in the field. We help governments, development partners and agribusinesses find out whether climate-smart agriculture programmes, input-subsidy schemes and market-systems interventions are actually changing what smallholder households grow, sell and earn — not just whether the activities took place.

Our agriculture work sits at the intersection of two things DEVMENT is known for: rigorous impact evaluation and gender-responsive research design. In 2024 our Lead Researcher, Dr. Kevin Ouko, co-authored two guides on gender-responsive digital technologies and nutrition programming in the agrifood system, published with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (CGIAR) — work that now informs how we design agriculture evaluations for our other clients.
